How many times have you had a dream 💭 an idea 💡or even a simple desire to do something—only to stop yourself because of this thought?
“What will people think?” It’s such a common mental roadblock 🚧. And there’s actually a scientific reason for it. Our brains 🧠 are wired for social belonging. Historically, survival depended on being accepted by the group. Rejection meant danger ⚠️ So when we worry about others’ opinions, it’s our brain’s way of trying to protect us from feeling left out or judged. But in today’s world, this same instinct often holds us back from doing what we actually want to do. Here’s the process I use with my clients to overcome this: 1️⃣ Catch the Thought – First, recognize that this is the thought stopping you. Bring it into the open. 2️⃣ Identify “People” – Who exactly are you thinking of? Is it a vague “everyone” or specific individuals? 3️⃣ Assess Their Opinion – Do you actually respect and value their perspective? Are they people whose opinions should shape your life choices? 4️⃣ Align with Your Faith – Is what you want to do halal and good? If so, then why let the fear of judgment stop you from something beneficial? When you go through this process, you can free yourself from this fear and move forward with confidence. As Imam Al-Shafi’i beautifully said: “Whoever seeks the pleasure of people at the cost of Allah’s pleasure will lose both, but whoever seeks Allah’s pleasure, even if people dislike it, will gain both.” If this is a struggle for you, let’s talk.
