11/19/2025 What the actual issue isWhat you think is the problem is almost never the real problem.
Yesterday, I had a consultation with a woman who came to me because she felt lost. She wanted help figuring out what she should do with her life. But when I go through my consultation process, I don’t stay on the surface. I look at every area of a woman’s life so I can find the real truth—the one she usually can’t see from inside her own life. And what I uncovered for her had was more urgent than career clarity. There was deep, unprocessed grief. There was heavy, painful emotion that had never been addressed. And beneath all of it there was financial abuse. She has access to zero money. Her husband controls every dollar—even grocery money. She’s a mother of three, and yet she feels like a child who must ask permission for the smallest things. She thought her next step was finding a career she loves. But as we dug deeper, the truth surfaced: When she did work, her paycheck was taken by her husband. She wasn’t allowed her own bank account. She quit because there was no point in working if she couldn’t access a single dollar she earned. So the pressing issue is not her career. It was her lack of agency, her lack of safety, and the financial control that strips her independence. When she finally saw that clearly, something clicked inside her. Before purpose, she needs protection. Before clarity, she needs stability. Before dreaming about her future, she needs control over her present. And the hardest part? She couldn’t work with me—not because she didn’t want to, but because she has no access to money at all. As a woman, a mother, and especially a mother of a daughter, this really stayed with me. Please hear me: Do not ignore the signs that your financial independence is being taken from you. Do not hand over your agency. Do not put yourself in a position where you cannot move without someone else’s permission. This is about dignity. It’s about Islam always honoring women with their own property, their own money, their own rights.
