What it takes to actually move on

“Just give it time.”

“It’s been long enough. You need to get over it.”

Have you ever noticed how often people say that?

As if healing is something that automatically happens because enough days have passed.

But time doesn’t heal.

If it did, every person who experienced heartbreak, betrayal, failure, grief, rejection, or trauma would eventually wake up one morning completely free of the pain.

Yet many people carry the same emotional wound for 5, 10, 30 years or even more.

Because time doesn’t change your mind.

Your brain keeps replaying the same thoughts, interpreting the same event in the same way, and producing the same emotions over and over again.

Every time you think the same thought, you’re strengthening the neural pathway associated with it. Your brain becomes more efficient at recreating the same emotional experience, even years later.

This is why someone can remember something that happened a decade ago and instantly feel angry, ashamed, hurt, or afraid as if it happened yesterday.

The circumstance is the event that happened.

Your thoughts about that event create your feelings.

Those feelings drive your actions and reactions.

And those actions create the results you continue to experience.

The past isn’t continuing to hurt you.

Your current thinking about the past is.

Awareness is the beginning of transformation. When you slow down and identify the thoughts your mind keeps offering, you finally have the opportunity to question them instead of unconsciously believing them.

That doesn’t mean pretending something didn’t happen or forcing yourself to think positive.

And it certainly doesn’t mean someone can simply tell you to “get over it.”

Most people desperately want to move on.

But you can’t flip a switch on years of practiced thinking.

Healing happens when you become aware of the story your mind is telling, process the emotions you’ve been avoiding instead of suppressing them, and intentionally choose thoughts that are more truthful, more empowering, and more aligned with who you want to become.

That is why coaching is so powerful.

A coach doesn’t erase your past.

They help you untangle the thoughts keeping you emotionally attached to it.

They help you separate facts from interpretations, process emotions instead of resisting them, and create new ways of thinking that literally begin rewiring your brain.

The goal isn’t to forget what happened.

The goal is to remember it without it continuing to control your present.

If you’re carrying something you wish you could simply get over, I’d love to help.
