4/12/2025 What if its all for nothing?“What if I work really hard… and I just get used, mistreated, or bullied because I’m too good at what I do?”
One of my clients came to me with this fear. She had been burned before—she gave her all, and instead of being appreciated, she was met with resentment and taken advantage of. And this fear makes sense when you’re operating from survival mode. But it’s not a workplace issue at its core—it’s a self-concept issue. Who are you when no one’s watching? Are you the woman who holds herself to a high standard, who delivers excellence not because someone deserves it—but because that’s just who you are? This is where ihsan comes in. Ihsan is when you strive for the best, knowing Allah is watching—always. You’re not performing for your coworkers, your manager, or for recognition. You’re performing in service of your identity, for the sake of Allah. Once you ground yourself in that self-concept —“I am someone who does excellent work because that’s who I am”—then you can clearly evaluate your environment. Does this place honor the version of me I’ve committed to being? Or does it try to diminish her? If the answer is the latter, the solution is not to shrink yourself. It’s to change the environment—not your standard. But your brain will resist. It’ll say: “What’s the point? Why work so hard if no one appreciates it?” “It’s too hard to find a better job.” “The market is awful right now. I’m lucky to even have this.” Here’s what’s really happening: Your brain wants to conserve energy. It hates the idea of you giving effort with “nothing to show for it.” So it starts subtly suggesting that maybe you should be less of yourself. But doing your best is never wasted if it reinforces the identity you want to live in. And here’s another trap to watch out for: If your brain believes “It’s impossible to find a better job,” it will filter the world through that lens. It will start collecting evidence: • “See? No one’s hiring.” • “That job closed too quickly.” • “I don’t have enough experience.” Your brain is not neutral—it’s a belief-confirmation machine 📠 So if it’s convinced there are no opportunities, that’s all it will see. But if you shift your thought to something more useful—like: “I just need one role. One healthy environment where I can thrive.” —then your brain starts scanning the world differently.
