5/19/2025 Shifting IdentitiesShifting identities is one of the hardest parts of growth.
When you want a new result in your life—whether it’s professional or personal—you’re not just adding a new skill. You’re becoming a new version of yourself. That shift might be toward confidence, openness, discipline, faith, or something else entirely. But whatever it is, your brain won’t like it. Even if the change leads to a better life, it’s still change—and your brain is wired to resist it. To protect you. To keep you where you are. One of my clients is a beautiful example of this. She’s accomplished. Adventurous. She’s traveled the world, taken big risks, and even made the empowered decision to freeze her eggs—because she knows she wants to be a mother. And she also wants to be married. But her current identity is guarded. Emotionally self-protected. She’s very selective about who gets close—and quick to shut things down before they get too deep. It wasn’t just that the right man hadn’t come along. It’s that her identity didn’t match the result she wanted. She was trying to bring marriage into her life while holding tight to an identity that had no space for vulnerability. So we did the real work—not of “finding someone,” but of becoming someone who could welcome someone. What helped her shift? I reminded her that yes, opening up to a man is scary. Yes, you can get hurt. But the role she ultimately wants—being a mother—requires a far deeper level of vulnerability. Motherhood is like watching your heart walk around outside your body. It’s constant emotional surrender. Constant love, fear, testing, patience. Compared to that? Letting someone in isn’t the scariest thing. It’s just the first step. And from an Islamic perspective, this is part of spiritual growth. You make du’a for something, and then you become the version of you who can receive it. Because Allah doesn’t just give us what we ask for—He gives us what we’re ready for. If you’re in a season of shifting identities—wanting something but unsure how to become the person who gets it—I’d love to help.
