2/24/2025 Same Story, Two RealitiesIf you ask a couple in an abusive marriage what their marriage is like, you’ll get two completely different answers.
The abuser might say everything is fine—they have control, things go their way, and they get what they want. The abused, on the other hand, would say they feel trapped, powerless, and hurt. Same marriage. Polar opposite experiences. Now, think about your own life. You might be in a situation—a job, a relationship, a mindset—that looks one way to you but completely different to someone else. Maybe others see red flags you’ve normalized. Maybe you’ve convinced yourself this is just how it is. That’s why reflection is so important. You have to make sure your situation is truly serving you. Does it support your well-being? Allow you to grow? Benefit you in the long run? Islam teaches us to always assess where we are and ensure it aligns with justice and goodness. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or an oppressed person.” The companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, we understand helping the oppressed, but how do we help the oppressor?” He replied, “By preventing him from oppression.” Sometimes, helping yourself means recognizing that something isn’t serving you—and having the courage to change it. Are you in a situation that truly benefits you, or just one you’ve gotten used to? Email me for a free consultation, and let’s explore where you are today and where you want to be.
