3/25/2025 Ramadan Day 25: The Power of DesireI once met someone who proudly said, “I do what feels right to me, and that’s all that matters.” Any suggestion that there might be a greater truth beyond personal feelings was dismissed. “Who’s to say what’s right or wrong? It’s all about what works for you.”
This mindset is everywhere today. We’re constantly told to follow our hearts 💞 trust our feelings, and even define truth for ourselves. But what happens when our desires become the ultimate authority in our lives? Allah (SWT) warns us of this in Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:23): “Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god? And Allah left him astray knowingly, sealed his hearing and heart, and placed a cover on his sight. Who then can guide him after Allah? Will you not take heed?” This isn’t to say we shouldn’t check in with ourselves, reflect on our path, or seek what aligns with us personally. But when we do that without the parameters of Allah’s guidance, that’s when it goes astray. When we seek what is good for us within the framework of His wisdom, that’s when it’s done right. Truth isn’t something we invent—it exists whether we like it or not. The real test is whether we seek it sincerely or let our desires lead the way. As Ramadan comes to an end, it’s a powerful time to reflect: Where in my life am I following what feels good over what is good?
