Ramadan Day 24: The Power of Personal Accountability

“Whoever does righteousness—it is for his own soul; and whoever does evil—it is against it. And your Lord is not ever unjust to [His] servants.”
— Surah Fussilat (41:46)

One of the most empowering realizations we can have is that our actions, choices, and mindset shape our reality. This ayah reminds us that the good we do benefits us first and foremost, and any harm we bring is to ourselves.

When I became a mother, it was such an all-consuming role—like no other. In those early baby years, I felt like I couldn’t do anything outside of caring for my kids. Every part of me was poured into them, and I didn’t even consider the possibility of carving out time for myself.

Then one day, I realized: I could find 30 minutes to an hour every day, no matter what, to do something non-baby related—something just for me. So I did. It gave me both relief and a boost at the same time. Just that little bit of time to recharge made me feel like myself again.

But accountability wasn’t just about what I added to my life—it was also about what I removed.

I became very minimal with my energy. I didn’t stretch myself beyond my capacity. There were no fancy dinners being cooked. I didn’t attend social gatherings that felt like a hassle, stress, or drain on my energy. I cut out anything that didn’t serve me in that phase and kept the focus on what truly mattered: taking care of my kids and finding the time to take care of myself. And because I made that choice for myself, I eliminated so much unnecessary pressure.

Personal accountability isn’t about blame—it’s about recognizing that we get to decide what to prioritize, where to place our energy, and what to let go of. It’s about making intentional choices that support us instead of drain us.
