“They ask me for money all the time…”

Her voice was steady, but I could hear the exhaustion under it.

“And I give it. Because I’m a giver. But they don’t respect me. They don’t value my opinion. They don’t trust me with anything that matters.”

I nodded. “And how does that feel?”

She paused. “Like I’m invisible. And I’m tired. So now, I’ve started saying ‘I don’t care.’”

“But that doesn’t sound like you,” I said.

“It’s not. But caring has been too painful. The problem is, I walk around with this thought that I’m always wrong. It’s just there, like background noise. And I react to things I don’t want to react to.”
