7/14/2025 Perseverance is emotional enduranceWhat does it really mean to persevere toward a goal?
It means not quitting just because you don’t want to feel what you’re feeling. Most people think perseverance is about willpower or pushing harder. But true perseverance is about emotional endurance. It’s about being willing to feel disappointment, fear, shame, doubt, inadequacy—and still not giving up. It’s about not making your negative emotion a reason to stop. It’s about staying in the discomfort without needing to escape it to feel okay again. That’s a skill many of us weren’t taught growing up. Instead, we were taught to distract, deny, or avoid. But without this skill, we end up quitting. Quitting on a relationship. Quitting on a career or business dream. Quitting on our own potential. Why? Not because we weren’t capable-- but because we didn’t know how to stay with the negative emotion without it overtaking us. In Islam, this is part of sabr. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever practices sabr, Allah will give him sabr. And no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than sabr.” Sabr isn’t passive. It’s not giving up and saying “oh well.” It’s a powerful act of self-regulation and trust in Allah. It’s feeling everything—and still choosing to keep going for the sake of something greater. If this resonates-- If you’ve ever found yourself quitting because the emotions felt too big to handle-- I offer free consultations for Muslim women who want to build emotional resilience and pursue their goals with sabr, clarity, and strength.
