10/17/2025 The Three Stages of HeartbreakThe Three Stages of Heartbreak 💔
I was coaching my client yesterday through a heartbreak. It was a guy she was speaking with for marriage. A doctor 🩺 Religious. Good manners. They met at work and got along really well. But when things started to move toward commitment-- He ghosted. We coached on many things, but one of the main parts of our work was understanding the three stages of heartbreak. 1️⃣ The Gore — The Raw Pain. This is where she is now. Sadness. Disappointment. Confusion. Anger. All the emotions that come when reality doesn’t match what you hoped for. This is where your heart aches and your mind tries to make sense of what happened. This is where we have to allow the full experience of emotion. Not resist it, not numb it, not distract from it — just feel it. 2️⃣ The Release — Letting Go. Once the pain has been processed, we start to gently release the emotional attachment. Not by pretending we don’t care, but finding every thought 💭 that’s creating the emotions she is feeling and discerning if this thought is even true? Is it helping? Understanding that what left you was never written for you -- and what’s written for you will never miss you. Not in a surface level way, but really seeing it. Coaching doesn’t take away the human experience, it just gives you power over how you experience it. 3️⃣ The Victory — Indifference. This is when you think about him… and feel nothing. No pain, no bitterness, no resentment — just peace. Because the opposite of love isn’t hate. It’s indifference. And there’s no shame in how long it takes to move through these stages. Healing is not linear — it’s one emotion at a time. If you’re navigating heartbreak, I want you to know: You don’t have to do it alone. Let’s work through the pain together -- so you can come out stronger, wiser and open to your next adventure instead of scared, scarred and closed off.
