Not getting your hopes up

Your brain will offer you thoughts like:

“I’m probably not going to get it but I’ll try.”
“I won’t really get the job but I’ll do what I can.”

That can sound mature.
Like you’re protecting yourself.
Like you’re being realistic and not getting your hopes up.

But here’s what’s actually happening.

When your brain believes the result is out of reach, it automatically pulls effort back.
Not consciously. Not lazily.
Strategically.

The brain is always trying to minimize pain.
So it lowers emotional risk by lowering effort.

And now the result becomes unlikely
not because it was impossible,
but because you never truly gave yourself a chance.

Your brain “prepared” you for disappointment
by quietly making it inevitable.

Then your brain says:
“But if you give 100% and it doesn’t work out it will hurt too much.”

Here’s the part most people never learn:

Disappointment doesn’t destroy you.
It’s not dangerous.
It’s literally a temporary vibration in your body.

When you know how to process emotion,
tight chest, heaviness, sinking feeling,
your brain learns: this won’t kill me.

And that changes everything.

Now you can say:
“I’d rather give 100% and actually have a chance
than protect myself and guarantee regret.”

And as a Muslim, this matters deeply.

I want to know that if something doesn’t work out, it’s because Allah didn’t decree it for me in this moment, not because I held back out of fear.

That’s tawakkul.

Trusting Allah after full effort.
Not using “don’t get your hopes up” as spiritual avoidance.

What would upset me isn’t rejection.
What would upset me is knowing I didn’t show up fully.

You show your brain:
✔ When I give 100%, I increase my chances
✔ If it doesn’t work, I’ll still respect myself
✔ I’ll process the disappointment instead of collapsing
✔ I’ll grow wiser, braver, and more capable
✔ And I’ll trust Allah’s decision without bitterness

That’s how empowerment is built.

If this resonates and you want to learn how to do this in real time,
I offer free 1:1 consultations where we look at:
– where your effort is lacking
– what your brain is trying to protect you from
– and how to move forward without fear running the show
