One of the hardest things to coach isn’t a circumstance objection.
It’s a thought objection. What’s the difference? A circumstance objection is something outside of you: * “I don’t have enough time.” * “I don’t have the money.” * “My kids are young.” * “I have a demanding job.” Those are real circumstances. They require creativity, planning, or problem-solving, but they’re visible. You can work with them. A thought objection is different. It’s when your brain says: * “I’m too old.” * “I’m not capable.” * “It’s probably not going to work.” * “People like me don’t succeed.” * “I have to be 100% sure before I start.” The challenge is that your brain doesn’t present these as thoughts. It presents them as facts. Your brain is constantly trying to conserve energy and protect you from uncertainty. Once a belief has been repeated enough, neural pathways become more efficient, making that thought feel automatic and unquestionably true. Your brain isn’t asking, “Is this accurate?” It’s asking, “Is this familiar?” This is called confirmation bias. Once you believe something, your mind selectively notices evidence that supports it while filtering out evidence that doesn’t. That’s why thought objections are so much harder to overcome than circumstance objections. You’re not arguing with reality. You’re arguing with what your brain has labeled as reality. Circumstances are neutral, but our thoughts about them create our emotions, actions, and ultimately our results. If you don’t question the thought, you’ll spend years trying to fix a life that’s actually being driven by a sentence in your mind. I coach my clients to separate facts from interpretations. I remind them that certainty doesn’t come before action, it comes because of action. Waiting until their brain stops objecting only strengthens the objection. As Muslims, we’re also reminded not to confuse our fears with Allah’s reality. Allah tells us to place our trust in Him after taking action. Our limited thinking is not a reliable measure of what Allah is capable of creating in our lives. Many of the stories in the Qur’an remind us that what seemed impossible by human logic became possible by Allah’s permission. The next time you feel stuck, ask yourself: Am I facing a circumstance or am I believing a thought? That one question can change everything for you. If you’re tired of feeling stuck because of thoughts that feel true but aren’t serving you, I’d love to help. Let’s identify the beliefs keeping you from the life Allah has made possible for you.
