7/4/2025 Independence DayWhat does “Independence” really mean?
Every year on July 4th, we’re told to celebrate freedom, fireworks, flags, and fanfare. But pause for a moment and ask: Freedom for who? Independence from what? These so-called “independence” days in settler colonial projects mark not liberation—but the solidification of land theft, genocide, and the forced displacement of Indigenous peoples. They mark the founding of nations built on the erasure of others. However this inauthentic narrative of independence still spreads across people and lands and is accepted because deep down, every soul does crave freedom. And so people connect to that message within the contrived illusion. Authentic independence is not the kind where one group dominates another, But the kind where you are finally free to: ✨ Be who Allah created you to be ✨ Say what you truly believe ✨ Do the thing your heart keeps whispering you were made for Islam doesn’t just encourage this—it commands it. Allah (SWT) says: “Indeed, We created man in the best of stature. Then We return him to the lowest of the low—except those who believe and do righteous deeds…” (Qur’an 95:4–6) We’re meant to rise. To unshackle ourselves from fear, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs. To step out of survival mode and into purpose. That’s the kind of independence worth celebrating. Not from responsibilities or values, but from everything that holds you back from fulfilling them. 🌿 If you’re ready to stop playing small, to grow into the version of you that can carry out the mission Allah gave you-- I work with Muslim women who are ready for change.
