5/13/2025 Frozen by FearI coached a client this morning who came to the call paralyzed by fear.
Her colleagues had said they were going to report her to their manager for something she insists she never said. She was spiraling and stuck—doing nothing, frozen in fear. So we slowed it all down. Step by step. I asked her, “What are you afraid of?” “That they’ll tell the supervisor.” “Then what?” “She might write me up.” “Then what?” “I might get fired.” “Then what?” “My parents will be upset. I won’t have a job.” “Okay… and what are you doing right now in this moment?” “Nothing. I’m scared. I feel frozen.” So we paused there. “Is the fear helping you in any way?” “No.” “Who is the only person who can control your life?” “I don’t know.” “It’s you. Yes, Allah is ultimately in control of our rizq and our outcomes—but you’re the only person on this earth who gets to control your life.” We uncovered how fear was giving her colleagues all the power. How fear was convincing her that she had no options. And how being afraid of what might happen was stopping her from taking the action that could change everything. We talked about the wiring of the brain—the primitive fear of being singled out or rejected by the group. To the brain, it feels like death. But to the soul? It’s a test. An opportunity. So I asked, “Let’s say the worst happens—you get written up, fired, your parents are disappointed. What then?” She thought for a second. “I’m still alive. I’m safe. I can tap into my network and find another job in a healthier environment. And I can trust that Allah will help me.” Yes. That’s when her power came back. That’s what we do in coaching. We take what feels huge and paralyzing, and break it down to see what’s real and what’s just a thought error that’s keeping you stuck. And we come back to the truth: You’re not powerless. You’re not alone. Allah is with you. If fear is keeping you frozen, let’s talk and experience what it’s like to untangle the thoughts that are holding you back.
