I had a client that saw herself as hot mess or very messy. Always behind, disorganized, messy thoughts — and because that’s who she believed she was, that’s exactly how she showed up. But when she started working on her self-concept, everything changed. She realized her brain didn’t have to stay this way, it wasn’t who she actually was — it was just her brain trying to be protective. It thought that by labeling her as a “hot mess,” it was helping her stay safe from failure, embarrassment, or disappointment. It was comfortable because it was familiar, she’s always lived like this. That’s the thing about our brains — they always think they’re protecting us, even when the identity they’re holding onto is actually holding us back. The way to change your self-concept is to understand why your brain is latching onto that old story. Ask: 💭 What is it trying to protect me from? 💭 How is this identity serving me — even if it’s not working anymore? Once you see that, you can gently show your brain a new truth. You can start believing: I’m someone who figures things out. I’m someone who can handle hard things. I’m someone who can be organized in every way. It’s important because you can’t create a new result from the same self-concept that created your old one.
