Feel fear and keep moving

One of the greatest skills you can develop is the ability to feel fear and keep moving anyway.

Most people spend their lives trying to avoid uncomfortable emotions.

Fear.
Nervousness.
Self-doubt.
Embarrassment.
The possibility of failure.

But those emotions aren’t the problem.

The problem is that no one taught us how to experience them without letting them make our decisions.

This is one of the reasons I love seeing kids play sports.

They don’t just learn how to kick a ball or score a goal.

They learn what it feels like to lose.

To make a mistake in front of everyone.

To disappoint themselves.

To feel nervous before a game.

To have a bad performance and come back the next week anyway.

They’re building emotional capacity.

That skill becomes incredibly valuable in adulthood because life keeps asking us to do things we’ve never done before.

Apply for the promotion.

Start the business.

Have the difficult conversation.

Set the boundary.

Speak on stage.

Launch the offer.

Every meaningful goal comes with uncomfortable emotions.

Recently, I coached a client showed her a thought many of us have growing up and in the back of our minds:

“If my parents would just let me, I would go after my dream.”

It made sense.

Growing up, parents had a lot of influence over our decisions.

But today as an adult parents aren’t stopping us anymore.

Yet many are still not moving because the obstacle was never just parents.

Now it’s the brain that offers thoughts like:

“What if I fail?”

“What if this doesn’t work?”

“What if people judge me?”

“Maybe it’s safer not to try.”

Your brain is designed to keep you safe, not fulfilled. It sees uncertainty as danger, so it offers fear as protection.

Every new level of growth requires a new level of emotional capacity. The people who create extraordinary results aren’t fearless. They’re simply willing to feel discomfort longer than most people.

Confidence is the evidence your brain collects after you’ve repeatedly done hard things.

If you’ve been waiting until you feel confident before taking the next step, you’ll wait much longer than necessary.

Learn to make decisions from your values instead of your emotions.

Feel the fear.

Bring the nervousness with you.

Allow your brain to protest.

And take the step anyway.

That’s how confidence is built.

That’s how dreams become reality.

If you find yourself knowing exactly what you want but feeling like something inside you keeps pulling the brakes, you’re not lacking motivation or discipline. You’re likely missing the skill of navigating uncomfortable emotions.

The good news is that this is a learnable skill.

If you’re ready to stop letting fear make your decisions and start creating the life you know you’re capable of, I’d love to help.
