Many of us unknowingly carry beliefs that were never truly ours. Ideas about success, self-worth, productivity, and even purpose—shaped by colonial, capitalist, and individualistic systems—can pull us away from the values we actually hold as Muslims.
Decolonizing your mindset means unlearning these external definitions and reclaiming a way of thinking that aligns with your faith, values, and unique purpose. What Does a Colonized Mindset Look Like? • Believing your worth is tied to how much you produce. • Defining success only through financial or status-driven achievements. • Feeling disconnected from your identity because it doesn’t fit mainstream norms. • Prioritizing individualism over community care and collective growth. What Does a Decolonized Mindset Look Like? • Recognizing that your worth is intrinsic—Allah (SWT) created you with purpose. • Defining success by how well you fulfill your amanah (trust) in this life. • Honoring your unique identity instead of molding yourself to external standards. • Shifting from hyper-independence to ummah-centered growth—where we lift each other up. Allah (SWT) reminds us: “And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you…” (Qur’an 11:113) When we internalize oppressive narratives—whether about our faith, identity, or purpose—we lean toward something that does not serve us. True liberation is in aligning with the wisdom Allah has already given us. The Benefits of a Decolonized Mindset • Deep inner peace—because your worth isn’t tied to external validation. • Confidence in your identity—because you define success on your own terms. • Stronger connection to your faith—because your mindset aligns with tawakkul (trust in Allah). Decolonizing your mindset is a lifelong journey, but every step toward it is a step toward true empowerment. What’s one belief you had to unlearn in order to align with your values?
