10/4/2025 Comparing yourself to othersOn a recent consultation, a college student told me she couldn’t stop comparing herself to her sister.
“Why does it feel like she’s smarter than me? Better than me? We grew up in the same house 🏡 with the same parents… shouldn’t we be the same?” Her brain had her spinning in the comparison loop 🔁 🧠 From a neuroscience perspective, our brains love to compare. It’s part of the survival wiring — constantly scanning, ranking, and measuring to figure out: Am I safe? Do I belong? Am I enough? So it makes sense her brain went there. But here’s the truth she needed to hear: 🍎🍊 Comparing yourself to your sister is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are created perfectly, with their own flavors, textures, and purpose. And even deeper: ✨ You are not your brain. You are your soul. Your soul was with Allah before it was placed in this body. That soul is unique. Her soul is unique. And no two souls will ever walk the exact same journey. Your soul knows it was created intentionally, with its own timeline, rizq, and path back to Allah. It’s only the brain that compares. This is why coaching is so powerful. The brain will always offer these comparison thoughts — but you don’t have to believe them. You can choose thoughts that align with who you really are. If you find yourself caught in comparison — whether with siblings, friends, or anyone else — know this: your journey was never meant to look like theirs. And if you want support breaking out of that comparison cycle and stepping fully into your own path, I’d love to help.
