Being nice isn't best

One of the best things you can give someone is clarity.

Our brain often tells us that being nice is more important then being clear but that means avoiding uncomfortable conversations.

So we soften the truth.
We delay giving feedback.
We don’t say no.
We leave people guessing because we don’t want to disappoint them.

But who does that actually serve?

Usually, it’s protecting our discomfort not helping the other person.

Clarity is a gift 🎁

It allows people to make informed decisions.
It helps them know where they stand.
It prevents them from wasting time, energy, and emotional investment.
It builds trust because your words match reality.

This is something I coach my clients on often.

Your job isn’t to manage other people’s emotions. Your job is to communicate honestly and cleanly. Their emotions are theirs to process.

We create unnecessary suffering when we try to control how someone else feels. We think, “If I tell them the truth, they’ll be upset.” So we avoid the conversation. Ironically, the uncertainty and mixed messages usually create far more pain than the truth ever would.

Honesty and clarity are acts of integrity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known as Al-Amin, the trustworthy. Trustworthiness isn’t just about telling the truth. It’s about being clear, dependable, and allowing people to know where they stand. Clear communication honors people’s time, dignity, and ability to choose.

You can be compassionate without being vague.

You can be kind without overexplaining.

You can say no without feeling guilty.

And you can tell the truth without carrying responsibility for someone else’s emotional response.

The people who value honesty may not always like what you say in the moment but they’ll know they can trust you.

If you’ve been avoiding difficult conversations because your brain tells you it’s better to be nice I’d love to help you learn how to communicate with confidence, compassion, and clarity.
