Being humble

One of my clients told me in a session, “It’s important to me that I’m humble and that people trust me.”

That sounds beautiful, right?
Humility is important in Islam and in life.
But as we dug deeper, we discovered something beneath the surface.

At work, she would ask for validation directly from others—not because she needed direction, but because she wanted to hear she was doing a good job.

When I asked her, “Don’t you already know you’re doing a good job?”
She hesitated. She told me, “If I think that on my own, that means I’m not humble.”

Her brain 🧠 had tied self-recognition to arrogance. She thought she couldn’t acknowledge her own effort unless someone else gave her permission.

But here’s the truth:
• Arrogance (kibr) in Islam is rejecting the truth and looking down on others. The Prophet ﷺ defined it this way.
• Confidence, on the other hand, is recognizing the blessing Allah has given you, appreciating your abilities, and using them to serve others.

Confidence is quiet. It’s internal. It doesn’t need to shout.

Arrogance is loud and insecure—it’s low self-esteem dressed up as superiority.

When you believe in your own value and the work you do, you’re not being arrogant—you’re being grateful. You’re acknowledging Allah’s ni’mah (blessing) in you.

This shift changed everything for her. She no longer needed constant validation. She could trust herself and remain humble.

If you’ve been confusing humility with hiding your worth, I’d love to help you untangle that. I offer free consultations for Muslim women ready to step into confidence without fear of arrogance.
